A Father’s Legacy Lives On Through Water 4 Mercy

Clearwater, FL – June 16, 2025 — As the world honors the role of fathers this Father’s Day, Water 4 Mercy is proud to spotlight one of its most cherished donors, Dr. Nagui Khouzam, who recently celebrated his 98th birthday. A man whose quiet strength and steadfast values continue to shape lives far beyond his own family, Dr. Khouzam exemplifies what it means to lead with integrity, love, and purpose.

Dr. Khouzam, a pediatric surgeon born in Egypt, courageously immigrated to the United States in 1969 with his wife Desirée and their five children, seeking a future defined by dignity and opportunity. His legacy is reflected not only in the life of his daughter, Nermine Khouzam Rubin—founder and CEO of Water 4 Mercy—but also in the thousands of lives uplifted by the nonprofit’s mission across Africa.

“Papa instilled in us the sacred value of work,” said Rubin. “When I launched Water 4 Mercy, it was his example that fueled the belief that real transformation begins with dignity—especially the dignity of work.”

That belief has taken root in Tanzania’s Mwinyi Village, Water 4 Mercy’s first project site, where access to clean water and sustainable agriculture has revolutionized lives. Since 2018, the village population has grown from 2,100 to over 5,000, supported by 16 water taps and a proven year-round agriculture program delivered in collaboration with Innovation Africa and CultivAid.

Today, the men of Mwinyi are once again providing for their families, while women are relieved of the burden of walking miles for water. Neighboring villages are now benefiting from shared resources and expertise—a ripple effect of empowerment rooted in responsibility, not dependency.

This story is deeply personal for Rubin. She recalls the day her father turned down food stamps offered by well-meaning visitors shortly after arriving in the U.S.: “Thank you, Sisters. But we came to this country to work, not to take,” he said. That conviction still powers Water 4 Mercy’s mission to this day.

As Rubin emphasizes, “The best way to empower an African woman is to restore dignity to the African man. To help him work again. That’s how strong families—and nations—are built.”

This Father’s Day, Water 4 Mercy honors Dr. Nagui Khouzam, whose legacy lives on in every child now in school, every harvest grown, and every community flourishing through the dignity of work.
